What Wholesalers Can Teach Us About Nvidia’s $250 Billion Backstop

In the first post of this series Why Nvidia Is Willing to Backstop $250 Billion for One Data Center, we walked through the scale of the southern Ohio data-center project and why Nvidia would even consider a $250 billion financing backstop. That piece focused on the “why it makes sense.” This one focuses on the risks—without the panic that currently dominates most headlines.

The best way I know to keep the conversation grounded is to borrow a page from a far less glamorous corner of the economy: ordinary wholesalers. For decades, distributors of everything from plumbing supplies to electronics have extended credit (trade credit, inventory financing, sometimes longer-term support) to the retailers and contractors who sell their products. It is not a perfect parallel—Nvidia is not shipping boxes of GPUs on 90-day terms—but it is a useful one. The dynamics of supplier-supported growth, the real risks that come with it, and the way those risks are often exaggerated by outside observers all look familiar once you view them through that lens.

The primary risk is straightforward. What happens if revenue growth at OpenAI—or any of the other AI companies using similar circular arrangements—slows meaningfully? In the wholesale world this is the classic slowdown in sell-through. The distributor has financed inventory or expansion for its customers on the assumption of continued strong demand. When that demand softens, the credit that once looked like smart partnership can start to feel heavy. Payments stretch. Some accounts need restructuring. A few may default. The wholesaler does not usually collapse, but earnings get hit, capital gets tied up, and the next expansion cycle becomes more cautious.

The same logic applies here. Nvidia’s backstop helps underwrite the build-out that ultimately drives demand for its chips. Other large AI players are arranging comparable structures with their own suppliers and financiers. If the underlying revenue growth of those AI companies decelerates faster than expected, the circular support that currently looks elegant could become less comfortable. That is a genuine risk. It is not, however, the near-term catastrophe some coverage implies. Wholesalers have lived through multiple demand cycles. Most of them are still standing. The ones that survive tend to be those that extended credit thoughtfully rather than indiscriminately, monitored their exposure, and retained the balance-sheet strength to absorb a few bad seasons.

Secondary risks exist as well. Concentration is one—too much exposure to a handful of large customers. Liquidity and valuation pressure is another: if markets begin to question the sustainability of the financing loops, the multiples attached to the suppliers can compress even if the underlying business remains healthy. And yes, there is the possibility of broader tightening if several of these arrangements hit stress at the same time. Again, the wholesale comparison is instructive. Industry-wide credit freezes happen, but they are the exception, not the rule, and they usually follow years of excess rather than a single ambitious deal.

Media coverage has amplified these concerns beyond the probable near-term likelihood. That does not make the risks imaginary. Just as in the wholesale world, hiccups are inevitable sooner or later. The question is not whether any friction will appear; it is whether the system is built with enough resilience and transparency to handle it without turning every normal cycle into a crisis narrative.

Looking further ahead, the structure of this market may itself evolve in a way that both deepens the circular model and introduces new considerations. As GPU compute becomes more standardized, transferable, and financeable, the data centers that house it could increasingly be treated as redeployable, income-producing infrastructure rather than single-tenant real estate. In that world, the buildings and power infrastructure gain residual value independent of any one tenant. Rising asset values and more liquid collateral can support additional borrowing and construction—further fueling the circular financing loop. That is a logical next step in the maturation of the industry. It is also a double-edged one. Greater leverage and the assumption of perpetual redeployability raise the stakes if those assumptions prove too optimistic. Overbuilding becomes easier, and the correction, if it comes, could be sharper. Wholesalers who expanded warehouse capacity on the belief that demand would never soften learned similar lessons the hard way.

None of this requires panic. It does require clear eyes. Circular financing is a powerful growth tool when demand is rising and the underlying technology continues to deliver. It becomes more complicated when growth slows or when the assets being financed are less flexible than hoped. The companies that navigate it well will be those that treat the financing as a partnership with limits rather than a perpetual motion machine.
